About the London region

Our London region provides criminal and civil legal aid for a population of more than 7 million. The region comprises 33 London boroughs, including the City of London and the City of Westminster.

About the London regional office

The London regional office has around 150 staff. This includes our specialist National Immigration & Asylum Team, which handles immigration work from all over the country.

There is also an operations team handling legal aid applications.

Our providers in the London region

The contracting team manages more than 900 providers. Of these about 80 are not for profit organisations such as law centres and Citizens Advice Bureaux.

The London regional office was able to help 112,500 people in 2006/07, up about 12% on the previous year.

Legal aid needs in London

The region is an area of contrasts.

London is Europe’s richest city but also has some of the most deprived areas in the UK with high levels of unemployment. More than a quarter of London’s neighbourhoods are in the top 20% most deprived in England.

London is home to 46% of England's minority ethnic population. Four out of every 10 Londoners belong to a minority ethnic group and they speak 300 languages.

About 85% of all UK asylum applicants live in the capital.
